PODS Annual Print Show at Wesley Gallery October 10-17, 2015

The artistic talents of Dripping Springs will be on display in photographic form this month from the 10th through the 17th at the Wesley Gallery, where the Photographers of Dripping Springs are presenting their annual show.

This year’s show spans the work of seventeen artists, as selected by judge Carla Ellard. She has been the Curator, Southwestern & Mexican Photography, at the Wittliff Collections at Texas State University since 2013, where she started as Assistant Curator in 2000. Having previously juried other photography shows for the A Smith Gallery, Seguin Art League, and Texas State campus photography club, Ms. Ellard has chosen the finest photos from the Club’s members, representing a variety of different styles and techniques.

Many people feel that black and white photography represents the art in its purest form, allowing the artist to present form, line, and texture without distraction. The theme for this year will be “monochrome photography”, encompassing straight black and white images along with similar styles such as old-fashioned sepia tones, cyanotypes, and more, for a very elegant show. Photographers displaying works include award-winning local artists such as Dave Wilson, Winifred Simon, Mary Hulett, and several others.

With their motto “Keepin’ Drippin’ Clickin’”, the Photographers of Dripping Springs have been very dynamic, from monthly field trips to workshops, and serving as the city’s official photographers for its many publications. The membership is active and always developing, as the growing quality and diversity of the works selected to show gives testament. Members range from enthusiastic hobbyists to published professionals, and the works on display employ everything from expensive SLR cameras all the way to an iPhone, so there’s a place for anyone with a passionate eye.

The opening of the show will be celebrated with the artists on the afternoon of Saturday the 10th, from 2 pm to 4 pm at the Wesley Gallery on Ranch Road 12. Join them for refreshments, wine and conversation at this reception, or stop by the gallery through the following week to enjoy their art.

Fall Gallery Show: official announcement

We’d already said that our fall show at Wesley Gallery will be opening October 10, with a monochrome theme. Here are more details.

Introducing our judge, Carla Ellard

Carla Ellard received her Masters in Library and Information Science from the University of Texas-Austin and a Bachelor of Science in Photography at East Texas State University (now A&M-Commerce).

She has been the Curator, Southwestern & Mexican Photography, at the Wittliff Collections at Texas State University since 2013, where she started as Assistant Curator in 2000. She has previously juried other photography shows for the A Smith Gallery, Seguin Art League, and Texas State campus photography club.

She has also participated in the Valley Land Fund photo contest, and appreciates the patience, technique/skill, and serendipity required for producing nature photographs.

Timeline

  • Submissions due August 29 – that gives you one month
  • Judge’s decisions by September 12
  • Best time to submit prints is the September meeting, 9/25 – but that only gives you two weeks, so we’ll have to allow for later submissions as well

Entries

  • All entries should be monochrome. Note that this doesn’t necessarily mean “black and white”. For example sepia-toned images are fine. The point is that they just use one color. The way you acquire the image – whether conventionally, or IR, or whatever, is up to you.
  • Basic entry fee is $15, which lets you submit up to 5 images. You can enter more images if you like, at an additional fee of $5 each.
  • You must be a member of PODS to enter.
  • Email entries to Show@gmail.com. Look for an acknowledgment. Remember, if you didn’t get an acknowledgment, then we didn’t get it.
  • As in the past, every entrant will have at least one image chosen to display.
  • Unlike the digital show, all selected images must be printed and framed (or otherwise prepared for professional-quality display).

The Fine Print

  1. Please make images family-friendly.
  2. Photos that have been shown in past PODS shows are not eligible.
  3. Entries must be received by the deadline given above, and must be acknowledged.
  4. By your submission, you authorize PODS to display your image(s) and otherwise promote the show and the club, including possible distribution a video-resolution image in a slideshow video and photobook of the show, but of course you retain your full copyright.
  5. The specs for submission sizes were causing too much confusion, so feel free to just send in a hi-res jpeg, and we’ll size it appropriately. If you really want to do it yourself, contact PODS.Show@gmail.com for details.

Specifications for printing

  1. We’re looking for a 16×20 matt.
  2. The size of the actual photo inside the matt is up to you, or just use a 16×20 photo with no matt, but we’re trying to get the overall product similarly sized.
  3. If the aspect ratio of your image is a little off, that’s OK within reason. Contact the show email if you have questions.
  4. A reasonably-sized frame, such that the overall size of the whole think is no more than 20×24.
  5. Alternate presentation types (like aluminum or lucite) are OK, so long as they’re high-quality with a professional look.
  6. Please put a wire or some kind of hook on the back for hanging.

The Details

  1. “Water” theme – photos can must deal with water in some fashion.
We’d like to interpret this somewhat liberally, so anything from landscapes of rivers to macro photos of dewdrops to ice and snow to clouds should be acceptable, but pushing it to “the human body is mostly water, so this portrait should count” is clearly out of bounds. The judge will have the final decision.
  2. You must be a member of PODS to enter. New members can join for pro-rated dues.
  3. Please make images family-friendly.
  4. Photos that have been shown in past PODS shows are not eligible.
  5. Entries must be received by the deadline given above.
  6. Fees:
    – $3 per entry up to 5 entries.
    – Each additional entry is $5
    – Submit your entry fee to
    John Hoag, Treasurer
    1013 Windmill Rd.
    Dripping Springs, TX 78620
Make check to “Photographers of Dripping Springs”
  7. By your submission, you authorize PODS to display your image(s) and otherwise promote the show and the club, including possible distribution a video-resolution image in a slideshow video and photobook of the show, but of course you retain your full copyright.
  8. In general, producing a print is optional. But for any images chosen for specific awards, you agree to provide a framed print(s) for the Show/Sale.
  9. All artists entering are guaranteed to have at least one photograph chosen for exhibition.

Specs for Entry

Note that these specs have changed since past shows to allow us to produce better quality photobook commemorating the show.
Submit digital files for judging.
  • JPEG format
  • You only need to submit one image, up to 3000 pixels on the largest edge. But if you’re concerned with sharpness at different resolutions, you may submit up to two sizes – we’d like a higher-resolution image for printing, and a smaller one for screen display. Submitting a single image is fine, but if you’d like a second copy that’s sharpened specially for screen or print, you may send that as well.
    • Suggested for screen display: 1000 pixels maximum dimension on any side. Since this is the digital show, this screen-optimized version is what the judge will be given.
    • Suggested for print: 3000 pixels maximum dimension on any side.
  • If your image doesn’t conform to these specs, we’ll try to convert it for you, but PODS is not responsible for the result.
  • Submit via email as attached files, to PODS.Show@gmail.com
